Mustang GT is built for performance and unlike some other performance coupes, GT includes the things that performance stands for. Things like the highest rated horsepower engine you can get in a Ford car. A firm, road-holding suspension system. An aerodynamically tuned, ground effects exterior. And an interior designed for the serious-minded driving enthusiast.
The engine that powers Mustang GT puts out 225 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 300-lb. ft. of torque at 3,200 rpm.• It includes numerous premium performance components detailed on page 13. The transmission is a Borg-Warner 5-speed manual with overdrive fifth. The Traction-Lok rear axle transfers the power to the road through Goodyear Eagle unidirectional performance tires.
Like the rest of the car, GT's interior is nothing less than exceptional. Take the seating for example. New for 1987 is a power adjustable lumbar support to go along with the adjustable thigh and side bolsters. The seat backs recline and the headrests adjust four ways. A thick, soft-wrapped steering wheel tilts to five positions. The instrumentation includes 7,000 rpm tachometer, the addition of reminder lights for low fuel, low washer fluid, low coolant and a "check oil" reminder light. Even the brake and accelerator pedals are positioned to allow heel-and-toe downshifting and there's a left side foot rest/support for the driver during hard cornering.
GT performance fun also comes in a convertible model complete with room for four. The top is power retractable with a rear glass window that can be left in place when you pop the top. And it can be unzipped and folded down with the cop up for added ventilation.
You'll notice that until now, the words "optional" and "available" haven't been mentioned. That's because everything discussed on this page is "standard." Of course, you can order a number of great options, too. Like the 7-band graphic equalizer with premium sound. Or electric remore controlled rearview mirrors (standard on convertibles), and more. But when it comes to performance, GT already has it.
